Description
This piece explores the haunting presence of addiction in all its forms, whether it’s substance use, disordered eating, gambling, or other compulsions. The central figure, quietly reading, is immersed in a moment of peace, growth, and self-reflection. Yet above them looms a larger, older version of the self; watchful, intense, and entangled in a wild crown of flames and fungi. This upper figure represents the shadow of addiction: always watching, always waiting, and often feeling more mature, more powerful, and more in control.

The mushrooms, recurring symbols in my work, represent growth, decay, memory, and neurodivergence. They spread across both figures, showing how tightly interwoven healing and harm can become. The elf ears speak to heightened sensitivity, common in neurodivergent folks and those in recovery, while the book symbolises an ongoing attempt to write a new story. The butterflies circling the lower figure echo themes of change, fragility, and fleeting hope.

I wanted this artwork to hold both fear and resilience. To show that being stalked by your addiction doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’re still here, still choosing, still turning the page.

Artist
I’m Kaliyongene, also known as Buya Nangoma, a Zambian-British neurodivergent artist who creates inclusive fantasy art rooted in cultural identity, mental health, and speculative storytelling.

My work draws from my deep love of nature, neuroscience, and the rich imaginative worlds of fantasy and cyberpunk. My work aims to challenge societal norms and celebrate the beauty of neurodiversity.

The design I submitted is a personal piece, a design version of myself. The oversized elf ears reflect my sensory sensitivity, especially to sound, while the mushrooms symbolise neurodivergence, growth, and connection to the natural world. The green tones and Zambian flag-inspired palette honour my roots and favourite colour. This design weaves together softness, surrealism, and bold Afrofuturist energy, a visual expression of both vulnerability and resilience.
